ABOUT ANDREW RAGAS

How did you learn to build websites? School, online courses, or on your own?

I am a self-taught web designer and developer. I went to school for 5 years, earning two degrees that would both immediately jump-start my career into this profession. I attended school to learn media studies and communication. Under this umbrella, I took several courses in writing and journalism, business management, marketing, media production, fine arts, and visual communication encompassing layout & design and graphic design. From there, I got all of my building blocks and skills needed for today.  Over the last 15 years, I’ve spent countless hours reading articles, tutorials, taking instruction lessons, and studying other peoples designs and coding to learn how to do myself. I’ve never worked for anyone else but myself and YOU. To date, I have built about 200 custom websites for clients and partners in just about every industry.

How do you keep up with current web design trends and technologies?

I research and ask a lot of questions on coder and designer forums. I also collaborate a lot with WordPress developers and theme & plugin creators to make them even more powerful. StackOverflow.com is one of my longtime favorites online resources to learn from.

What types of websites have you designed?

All kinds, and for every industry type: Law firms; Medical and Dental practices; Food and beverage; Hospitality (resorts & hotels); Television shows and media; Non-profits and organizations; Sporting goods; Manufacturing; Fishing, Hunting & Outdoors Industry; Marine and Auto; Clothing & retail stores; Shipping and Logistics; Large corporations. You dream it, and I’ll build it.

What kinds of businesses have you worked with?

I work with anyone who is committed to the cause like I am for you. Help me, so I can help you. I specialize in web design for businesses of all shapes and sizes. Small, medium, and large sized businesses have trusted me with their web design needs. Worldwide organizations, and huge corporate clients rely on me too.

Do you have any marketing experience? If so, how do you integrate it into your work?

Several years of course work with real-life experience. I have become a trusted partner for many employing SEO, Google Ad Words, Social Media page integrations, and call-to-actions. My job as a designer is to work with you and your business to communicate and connect your products & services to consumers, website visitors, and their target markets.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I have always been a go-getter with an entrepreneurial spirit. Growing up, I never wanted to work for anyone else but myself and other partners. I have been very artistic and creative my whole life, and when I learned basic coding in High School (20 yrs ago) it was then I realized I could pursue this and make a career out of it. I wouldn’t be in this position today if it weren’t for my growing network, and customer referrals.

WEBSITE DESIGN FAQ’S

How long does it take to build our new site?

The ball is your court, and it’ll depend on your engagement, preparedness and organization. After contract is signed, and all contents & requests off my checklist and web plans are furnished by you, we can sometimes start immediately, or I will assign you to a upcoming block I have available. When I can start then depends on my soonest availability. Since this is a time based industry, I prioritize and require time management and organization to thoroughly and efficiently accomplish all projects without any delays.

On average I am able to get most mid-size websites completed and running anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks. Large sites and corporate clients can take up to 1 or 2 months. My availability fluctuates seasonally, as from November thru April I can be heavily booked, with a wait list and a backlog of up to 1 month. During an average month, I work on 2 to 3 website design projects at a time. Once contract is signed, you will be placed onto my wait list. Once a few projects ahead get completed, yours will begin as availability opens.

What platform do you use for building websites?

All of the websites I build are on the WordPress Content Management System (CMS). WooCommerce, YOAST SEO, Wordfence Security, and an Events Calendar integration are a few of the major plug-ins I frequently use too. I want to create and operate websites with the best possible plugins and software available. For clients who require more specialized retail or storefronts, I am willing to work with Shopify.

Will my website be compatible on all devices?

Yes. Everything is responsive and optimized for desktop, pad, and mobile. Your websites can be used anywhere, anytime.

Do you design websites on your own?
Or do you have a team or outsource certain tasks?

Everything is done by me and only by me. You hire me to work on all aspects of your project. Quality control and a strong interpersonal relationship are very important to me. On special occasions, I may sub-contract to more experienced & technical developers who will do the more hardcore and nerdy things I cannot do. I vehemently oppose outsourcing, and will never work with companies or businesses that outsource, because ultimately they get the poor quality they deserve.

How much does it cost to sign up?

None – ZERO. There are no base prices or one-size-fits-all approaches either.

Once contract is signed, you will only be billed for all work completed as based on my current hourly rate. I focus on flexible and fair pricing as determined by market value and an hourly salary. Projects are billed monthly, or at final completion whilst factoring our agreed upon estimates and proposals. Monthly maintenance is billed monthly. I only charge by the hour to save you $$$, retain you as a lifelong partner, and best manage my life and schedule.

Do you custom design websites or use pre-made templates?

Templates are junk. Another problem with them are structural and design limitations, in addition to becoming outdated or incompatible with WordPress core versions if their theme developer hasn’t updated them to compatibility. Everything I build for clients are custom layouts that we accomplish with WP Bakery and other WordPress tools.

How many pages will you design for my website?

I will build you however many pages as you need and request. If workload and page number exceeds project estimate & range, additional fees will accrue.

Can I view my website while it’s still in progress?

Once your website design has been complete, I will furnish you with access and logins to a staging URL so you may review.
You’ll be able to request any revisions and provide me with your honest feedback.

How many revisions are you willing to make?

I offer unlimited revisions within a week following site completion. I’ll revise it until you’re 100% satisfied.
Note – as I work only by the hour, you will be charged for all completed work on final invoice.

Will my website be built to expand as my business grows?

Always. Each of my websites are built with the flexibility, compatibility, and capacity to continuously grow and expand as your business grows.
We will always add more functionality and content in the future as needed.

How will we communicate during the web design process?

We prioritize phone call and e-mail. Expect daily communication and/or e-mail updates to follow at the conclusion of most work days on the project. I can meet in-person at your office if you are located in the Chicagoland area, but we will be more practical and efficient by employing the communication methods above.

Will I own my website once it’s completed?

You own everything once all invoices are paid in full. Ownership is transferred over then. Everything I build becomes your business’s intellectual property. You’re just paying me to design and build it, and manage it!

Will my website be secure?

No website is bullet-proof from malware and hackers unfortunately. But with a reliable and secure server, along with my weekly to monthly security scanning, and my monthly oversight, you can be virus free and healthy with zero downtime. I believe in signing up customers to top-shelf website hosting providers that will offer SSL’s, site backups, and security services.

Can I contact you for future updates to my design?

You can contact me anytime. I will prioritize customers who are under monthly service agreements versus all others. E-mail requests take priority over phone requests. I am not an emergency service, but am available for support and repairing any emergency catastrophes Mondays thru Thursdays every week or unless specified otherwise. At the completion of every project, I furnish clients with tutorials and video instruction to help them manage and make page updates. If DIY updating is difficult, my services can be retained at my hourly rate.

What if I don’t have a service agreement with you? Will you still help me?

Customers who are serviced monthly, and customers on active projects get first dibs on my available time. If you need help with your site but are a newcomer, a previous client, or not an active client, feel free to get in touch by submitting a support ticket. Please consider that turnaround time is often at least a few weeks and during peak months sometimes longer.

How does payment and invoicing work?

Just as I complete your assignment in timely fashion, I request payments to be completed  in 15 days or less.

For some projects such as large sites and corporate clients, I require 50% of the total project cost to get started, with remaining balance due upon completion. Otherwise for most projects, I will invoice either every 2 weeks, at the end of each month, or all at once when project is finished. We’ll do what’s most comfortable and timely for me.

Services will be suspended or permanently terminated if significant payment delays are had.

Can you help me update my existing website that was built by another web designer?

I inherit many websites. I will be glad to update and maintain your existing website if it is already a WordPress platform. If website had been poorly built, or is a system I am unwilling to work with requiring for me to learn, I will insist on rebuilding it.

Do you offer web hosting services?

NO. I do not offer website hosting or domain registration services. But provide my clients with referrals to suggested website hosting companies that I work with and have had positive vendor relationships with. Once you are signed up with customer accounts, I will manage and maintain your website hosting and domain registration accounts.

Do you do I.T. services?

Website design and I.T. services are not the same. This is an unrelated field, requiring technical expertise in computer network systems. In the event this is needed for you, I refer all of my web clients to Vitech PC Services of Itasca, IL.

Vitech PC Services

Do you manage E-Mail accounts or provide E-mail service?

NO. I do NOT manage emails. There are plenty of great platforms such as Office 365 and Google Suite which do a great job for DIY email management.

I DO NOT PROVIDE ANY E-MAIL SYSTEMS SERVICES OR REPAIR SERVICES. ALL CLIENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN.

Can you manage my social media accounts?

Due to time conflicts and challenges, I do not offer social media management services and will not post on behalf of them.  However, I do assist some select clients and specific industry types with their campaigns, page covers & artwork, and digital media.

What happens to my site if I want to terminate service or hire someone else?

We should hope this never happens. However, if services are canceled or you hire someone else, I require a 30 days written notice, and all billing must be in good standing. I am not responsible for training new persons who overtake website. If you want to keep existing website but have new persons piggy-back off of my work in this manner, you will be charged a termination fee.
